In this section, you can consult and download the descriptive lists of the archival units that form the General Correspondence (il carteggio). These are organised into 15 categories representing the various functions and activities carried out by the Municipality over time.
Note for Researchers: All original archival records, registers, and files are written in Italian.

Category I: Administration (Amministrazione)
Contains regulations and ordinanze dei Sindaci (mayoral ordinances); provisions concerning the municipal archive; atti economali (internal financial administration records); records regarding local elections, municipal employees, and concorsi (public service entrance exams); summons for the Consiglio (Council) and the Giunta (Executive Committee); litigation records; and documentation regarding public notices.
Category II: Charity (Beneficenza)
Covers records regarding various institutions operating in the fields of assistance and welfare, such as: congregazioni di carità (charitable congregations), opere pie (“pious works” or religious charities), orfanotrofi e brefotrofi (orphanages and foundling hospitals), shelters for the poor, ospizi (hospices/almshouses), monti di pietà e frumentari (institutional pawn shops and grain banks), and charitable fairs.
Category III: Urban and Rural Police (Polizia urbana e rurale)
Contains records regarding the guardie municipali (municipal guards), public sanitation services, inspections, reports, and formal complaints.
Category IV: Health and Hygiene (Sanità e igiene)
Includes records from the health office regarding medici condotti (district doctors), pharmacists, and medical practices; health ordinances and related fines; records from the municipal chemical laboratory; documentation regarding epidemics and contagious diseases; lazzaretti (quarantine stations), the municipal slaughterhouse, and cemeteries.
Category V: Finance (Finanza)
Covers records relating to municipal assets (purchases, bequests, rentals, etc.) and the entity’s financial status: dazi (customs/duties), the centrale del latte (municipal dairy), catasto (land registry), loans, tax collection (esattoria), and court-related expenses.
Category VI: Government (Governo)
Includes records concerning relations with the National Government, such as political elections, national holidays, State assets, reduci (war veterans), and state monopolies.
Category VII: Grace, Justice, and Worship (Grazia, Giustizia, Culto)
Covers dealings with the Courts and prisons; the ufficio di conciliazione (small claims/mediation office); and records relating to religious worship and buildings.
Category VIII: Conscription and Troops (Leva e Truppe)
Contains records regarding the servizio di leva (compulsory military service) and barracks.
Category IX: Public Education (Istruzione pubblica)
Records concerning school staff (recruitment and retirement); school reports; documentation regarding school fees and books; and records concerning monuments, commemorative plaques, and bande musicali (brass bands).
Category X: Public Works (Lavori pubblici)
A rich category containing documents and blueprints for roads, squares, public lighting, and sewers. It also includes espropriazioni (compulsory purchases/eminent domain), private building permits, case operaie (workers’ housing), and the maintenance of public gardens like “Villa Garibaldi”.
Category XI: Agriculture, Industry, and Trade (Agricoltura, Industria, Commercio)
Documentation regarding local crops and pest control; trade and commercial licences; national/international exhibitions; and local markets and fairs.
Category XII: Civil Status (Stato Civile)
This section contains records relating to population censuses.
Note: Original Birth, Marriage, and Death certificates are found in the specific Registri (Registers) section.
Category XIII: Foreign Affairs (Esteri)
A smaller category covering communications with foreign countries and records regarding emigrazione (emigration).
Category XIV: Local Festivals (Feste cittadine)
Records concerning feste patronali (patron saint festivals) and other special local celebrations or anniversaries.
Category XV: Public Security (Sicurezza pubblica)
Concerns public safety, including: derelict buildings, the trade of explosives, public entertainment licensing, strikes, and records of the Guardie di città (city guards) and the manicomio (psychiatric hospital/asylum).
These lists are subject to constant verification and analytical review; therefore, they may be updated or modified over time.
