Early years
The Archive is also a place for the very young, where the discovery of memory becomes play, storytelling and wonder. The activities dedicated to children in the final year of nursery school begin with a visit designed to introduce them to the idea of an archive.
We tell stories, show ancient papers and create illustrated materials to guide children on a little journey through time. Each class can then choose a creative workshop, turning traces, objects and marks into memories to keep.
The Archive of My Things
Workshop activity, preceded by a visit to the Archive
Every collection of objects can become an archive — as long as it tells a story. A journey through small memories that turn into little stories to be preserved and remembered, helping us begin to create our own personal archive. Cuttings, images, drawings of “special” objects, scissors, glue and small sheets of paper will be used to make the first “file” of a personal archive, kept in a little box made just for the occasion.
Trace, Mark and Draw
Workshop activity, preceded by a visit to the Archive
Children and teachers will be guided through a visit to the Archive specially tailored for these young citizens. They will observe selected documents relating to some “familiar” places and/or monuments of the city, and will then take part in a workshop where they use old writing tools to “make marks” and create a drawing inspired by their experience.
Stamping Together
Workshop activity, preceded by a visit to the Archive
The meaning of a stamp: what is it, and how does it work? This activity will help children understand how an object can leave an imprint and create shapes different from itself. Each child will then design their own personalised stamp — which they can take home with them.
